Card of the Day: 1989 Hoops Spud Webb

March 24, 2009

Today’s card is a 1989 Hoops Spud Webb. Standing at 5’7” tall, Webb was a Cedar tree among the Redwoods of the NBA. But what Spud lacked in height he made up for in guts. He once dunked over the tallest man in the NBA, Manute Bol.

In 1986, Webb surprised everyone when he took part in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Webb got the crowd’s attention with one-handed off the backboard jam. But he had just begun to reach into his arsenal of aerial assaults on the hoop. After advancing to the finals versus his teammate and defending Slam Dunk Champion, Dominique Wilkins, Webb thrilled the crowd with lob to himself and… well, I’ll let this video speak for itself.
